Trade Deadline Day Roundup

There were 16 trades involving 35 players and 12 draft picks during today's trade deadline day.

It was considered a slow and unspectacular trade day by most observers. The headline deals were the Kings acquisition of Dustin Penner and the Capitals addition of Jason Arnott and Dennis Wideman.

The Rangers ended up getting center John Mitchell from the Toronto Maple Leafs in return for a 2012 7th round pick. The 26-year-old, who has played in 159 NHL games was sent to the the Connecticut Whale.

However, the big news in Rangerland was the announcement that Martin Biron is out for the season with a broken collarbone. He was struck by a puck in practice this afternoon. Double big ouch!

Washington Capitals: The Caps are a better and deeper team today then they were yesterday after picking up Dennis Wideman and Jason Arnott. But we put them in the Jury's Out category because we feel they overpaid for Arnott, which displays the level of desperation on a team that has more pressure than any other to win this season...

Rangers, Coach Implode

First Dan Giradi with a questionable boarding penalty. Then it was Brian Boyle with a no question delay of game. Then Vinnie Lecavalier, with his 15th, a 5-3 power play goal and basically the game was over. That is it was over until the press conference when an irate, disagreeable coach sat there glaring at the press, daring them to ask a question he would refuse to answer.

He was irate over the call on Girardi. You know what. It's a farce. You get p'd off against the refs and meanwhile you coach a BS game. You get a power play point specialist and you start the first power play with five forwards. And you blame the refs for the loss. You get one shot on goal on the first three power play plays and you blame the refs for the loss.

You score one goal in the game and it was disputed, and you blame the refs for the loss. You dole out ice time like a First Sargent giving out weekend passes to tired GI's, and you blame the refs for the loss. You manage, from the goodness of your heart, to give all of 4:14 of ice time to Sean Avery, and he still manages to get three hits. You give all of 10:47 of ice time to Brandon Prust who scores the only goal for the Rangers, shorthanded.

We are making noise about a playoff spot. Why? If Lundqvist doesn't stand on his head we are doomed. We scored six against the Caps the other night. Is that our quota for this week? Just once, I would like a reporter with enough guts to tell this blowhard what a stiff coach he is. Just once.

Wipeout At The Capital

Probably the last time Washington saw anything like this is when the British burned the Capital during the War of 1812. I can't figure whether the Rangers are getting better or are the Caps going into the tank? The Rangers even went 2-4 on the power play and zipped the Washington power play to an 0-5. Yes, Ovechkin was playing for the Caps and Christensen was playing for the Rangers.

How do you figure? No Gaborik. No problem. The Rangers scored six goals. No Staal. No problem. The Rangers allowed no goals. Ryan McDonagh played along side Dan Girardi and it was seamless. The kid is good. The kid is ready. Speaking of kids, Michael Sauer is a rock.

Speaking of rocks, Lundqvist was great. Not too many difficult saves, but he did make 35 and racked up his 8th shutout of the year. He is now 25-20-4 on the year and will soon pass the Gumper on the all time goalie win list. When that happens I will toast one for the Gumper.

For the first time in almost two months the Rangers gained two points on the Devils who lost to Tampa Bay last night 2-1. Tampa is rolling right now, with 76 points, in second place, seven points behind the Flyers. The Rangers are in 7th, one point behind Montreal and three ahead of Carolina. The Rangers play Tampa Bay Sunday afternoon at the Garden and will have their hands full trying to stop Stamkos and St. Louis.

With 19 games to go this will be a big one for the Blueshirts. We will see if the Cap win was an aberration or the start of a run. The Garden should be rockin'. It will depend on our rocks. Lundqvist and the twin towers of defense, Ryan McDonagh and Michael Sauer. Isn't it a shame that youth has to be wasted on the young!

The Rangers Need Splash!

Splash: To strike and dash about (water, mud, etc).

The NY Knicks made a big splash when they signed Carmelo Anthony to play for them. Last night's debut was a smashing success and anyone who saw it, either live or on TV, will attest to that. The Rangers need that kind of impact. The Rangers need that type of player. The Rangers need splash.

Now the Rangers are a nice group of players but does anyone recognize them on the streets of NY? Outside of Henrik Lundqvist and Sean Avery, most Rangers are unrecognizable. Lundqvist is 'The King' and is always dressed to the nines. Avery? Well Avery is Avery and will always be recognized.

Remember 1994? The Rangers won the Cup and the Knicks were one John Starks clang off the rim from winning the NBA championship. Mark Messier was 'The Star' of the Rangers and would often be seen at Knick games with the babe of the month on his arm. Anthony Mason, the rugged Knick forward, would often be at Ranger games strolling around the Garden in a Rangers jersey.

So the Rangers must go out and pick up a big name star, a guy to make some splash. But whom to get? Ovechkin? It would be easier to get congress to work 40 hours a week and take a paycut then get the Great O to come to NY? Syd the Kid? Naw. He is too much of a whinner. Steve Stamkos? Too bland. The Sedin twins? We can hardly afford one. Jerome Iginla? Interesting. He might be the one but it is a stretch.

I know. Fire the Stealth GM and coach disagreeable. That would be a big splash. Replace them with Mike Keenan as GM and Adam Graves as coach. What a novelty. A GM who actually knows hockey and a coach who would not have a problem talking to the press and respecting the fans. Now that would be a splash.

Whizzer Wolski

The Rangers won a game last night that took us through all the emotions that test our sanity. We, along with the team, went up, down, euphoric, downcast and finally joyful. It started out gangbusters when two minutes into the game Brandon Prust put in the rebound off of an attempted wraparound by Sean Avery. With rookie Kris Newbury centering the two they were dynamic in the opening minutes. The coach was so impressed with their performance that he basically benched them the rest of the game. Prust got 10:42, Avery 8:01, Newbury 7:42.

The Rangers blew two one goal leads but entered the third period ahead 2-1. When leading going into the third period I believe the Rangers are 20-0. Remarkable. I guess they are now 21-0. Two Jussi Jokinen goals in less than three minutes had given the Canes a 3-2 lead until the Whiz Kid, Wolski, struck with less than two minutes to play with a goal that went off of Cane defenseman Jay Harrison. That tied the game.

However, Whizzer wasn't finished. After a lengthy discussion with back up goalie Marty Biron, Wolski came out as the last shooter in round three and won the game with a laser past goalie Cam Ward. So the Rangers go to Washington hanging on to seventh place by three points over the Canes who still have a game in hand.

BTW, did I mention that the Devils won again and are now nine points behind Carolina with a game in hand. They are twelve points behind the Rangers with two games in hand. Stay tuned. This is getting interesting.

Not Quite Good Enough

The Rangers outshot the Flyers 39-24, outhit them 31-28 and even blocked more shots, 21-17, but where it counted, on the scoreboard, they fell short. But that has been the story of the season, falling short on offense. But, while the Rangers put on a furious drive in the third period I never had the feeling that the Flyers weren't in complete control.

The Rangers outshot the Flyers 15-3 in the third period, had numerous chances and Derek Stepan scored the only goal that brought the Rangers to within one. An empty netter gave the Flyers a two goal win.

The Rangers lost Gaborik early, but based on his recent performance I doubt that it hurt the Rangers. What I found amazing was that the trio of Boyle, 12:38, Prust, 10:21, and Avery, 10:15, got the least amount of ice time of any of the Rangers forwards. The trio combined for five shots, five hits and eight blocked shots.

Along with Callahan, this trio forms the heart of the grind it out philosophy that has brought this team to its level. Let's face it Gaborik has been invisible this season. He stays away from the middle of the ice and has reduced his game to a perimeter game. Is there an injury there that we are not aware of? Not today's injury, I'm talking about all season long. This is Gaborik's worst season of his career, so what is the story?

Anyhow, another big loss. We can't beat the Flyers and the Devils are coming like gangbusters. Is it worth the playoffs and a one round elimination? The only ones that would benefit are the coach and the GM. It eases the pressure on them. I want the pressure increased on both as I would prefer both gone. We have gone all year with a poor offense, a bad power play and we cannot protect our goalie. This is not a prescription for success, it is one of continued long time failure.

Hockey Night Jive - 2/19/11

So our Rangers were trapped and skinned last night by the Jersey Devils. It wasn't a pleasant night and reading the rehashes has been depressing. Lundqvist brings his 'A' game to an important matchup and no one else from New York shows up. The Biebs could have given him more offense than the woeful Rangers.

The Warren Zevon and Mitch Albom hockey song "Hit Somebody" will be made into a movie. Maybe our own Canadian farm boy, Derek Boogaard, from Saskatoon will have a cameo. However, he should stipulate that a stuntman will have to fill in for any fight scenes. We don't want the Boogeyman to get hurt anymore. By the way, the Boogeyman has seen the red light twice in his career.

He was born in Big Beaver by the borderline
He started playing hockey by the time he was nine
His dad took the hose and froze the back yard
And little Buddy dreamed he was Rocket Richard
He grew up big and he grew up tough
He saw himself scoring for the Wings or Canucks
But he wasn't that good with a puck

Buddy's real talent was beat'n people up
His heart wasn't in it but the crowd ate it up
Through pee-wee's and juniors, and midgets and mites
He must have racked up more than six hundred fights
A scout from the Flames came down from Saskatoon
Said, "There's always room on our team for a goon
Son, we've always got room for a goon"

There were Swedes to the left
Russians to the right
A Czech at the blue line itching for a fight
Brains over brawn--that might work for you
But what's a Canadian farm boy to do?
Hit somebody!
What else can a farm boy from Canada do?
Hit somebody!
What's a Canadian farm boy to do?
Hit somebody!
What else can a farm boy from Canada do?

Hit somebody! was what the crowd roared
When Buddy the goon came over the boards
"Coach," he'd say, "I wanna score goals"
The coach said, "Buddy, just remember your role
The fast guys get paid, they shoot, and they score
Protect them, Buddy, it's what you're here for

Protection it's what you're here for
Protection--it's the stars who score
Protection--go and kick somebody's ass
Protection--don't put the biscuit in the basket just
Hit somebody! it rang in his ears
Blood on the ice ran down through the years
The king of the goons with a box for a throne
A thousand stitches and broken bones
He never lost a fight on his icy patrol
But deep inside, Buddy only dreamed of a goal
He just wanted one damn goal

There were Swedes to the left
Russians to the right
A Czech at the blue line itching for a fight
Brains over brawn--that might work for you
What's a Canadian farm boy to do?
Hit somebody!
What else can a farm boy from Canada do?
Hit somebody!
What's a Canadian farm boy to do?
Hit somebody!
What else can a farm boy from Canada do?

In his final season, on his final night
Buddy and a Finn goon were pegged for a fight
Thirty seconds left, and the puck took a roll
And suddenly Buddy had a shot on goal

The goalie committed, Buddy picked his spot
Twenty years of waiting went into that shot
The fans jumped up, and the Finn jumped too
And coldcocked Buddy on his follow through
The big man crumbled but he felt all right
'Cause the last thing he saw
was the flashing red light
He saw that heavenly light

There were Swedes to the left
Finns to the right
A Czech at the blue line itching for a fight
Take care of your teeth--that might work for you
But what's a Canadian farm boy to do?
Hit somebody!
What else can a farm boy from Canada do?

Scandinavian Delights

The Rangers beat a good team last night, but did it the hard way. Twice they blew one goal leads and had to go into the shootout to come up with a win over the Kings. They did it on shootout goals by Christensen, 4-4 in shootouts and Zuccarello, 5-6 in shootouts. Then there was Lundqvist who came up with his career 200th win and is 4-2 in shootouts this year.

The Rangers got goals from Callahan (15), Gaborik (17) and Dubinsky (20) but couldn't hold two one goal leads. The competition stiffens for the Rangers with games coming up against the Devils, tonight at The Rock and Sunday at home against the Flyers. The Devils are on fire with a 13-1-2 run in their last sixteen games. What looked like the impossible dream a month ago now looks like it could be one of the great comebacks in hockey.

The Devils are twelve points behind eight place Carolina with a game in hand and sixteen points behind the Rangers with two games in hand. Plus, the Devils have two more game against the Rangers. Tonight is more than a trap game. It is the game.

Rangers' Rally Ends Skid

After a little over five minutes it looked liked the Rangers were headed for their seventh straight loss. Two quick Penguin goals put the Rangers behind the eight ball and a timeout was called by the coach. The timeout seemed to do the trick as the Rangers roared back with five unanswered goals, two in the first and three in the second, and hung on for a 5-3 win over the injury plagued Penguins.

Besides Crosby and Malkin being out with injuries the Pens also lost Cooke and Goddard to game suspensions over their massive brawl at the Coliseum on Friday night. But they came out like gangbusters and aided by a poor play by Eminger they scored their first goal. Engelland put a goal in off of Eminger, after Eminger lost his stick, and Johnson put one in that maybe Lundqvist should have stopped.

Eminger was rewarded for his transgression by getting all of 4:08 minutes of ice time for the entire game. Funny, I don't ever remember anyone else, maybe Avery, getting rewarded like that for making a poor play. But this is the world of coach disagreeable, a perfect book end to the Stealth GM.

The Rangers scored three power play goals, shattering their woeful streak on the power play. They did all the right things after the timeout. The first two goals, by Boyle and Callahan, were redirected shots. Callahan was a power play. Then in the second it was Prospal, Callahan, PP, and Anisimov, also a power play. A late goal by the Pen's Sterling cut the lead to two and the Rangers had to sweat out a double minor to Sauer, which they killed.

It was the second double minor the Rangers had to kill. Dubinsky took a stupid double minor which the Rangers killed. He was rewarded for his dumb play with almost 19 minutes of ice time. I guess not all "pigs" are created equal. But the Rangers won a game and stopped their skid and tomorrow the blame stream media will extol coach disagreeable for his "brilliant time out". The more things change the more they stay the same.

It's Getting Late Early

Not only is Yogi a prophet, but the guys at SI may also be right when they picked the Rangers to finish 12th. A look at the standings find the Toronto Maple Leafs in 12th place just ten points behind the Rangers and the Leafs have two games in hand. What is more ominous is the hard driving rejuvenated Devils, who are in 13th place and 14 points behind the Rangers with a game in hand. Remember a while back when I mentioned that the Devils were 26 points behind the Rangers? You probably all laughed. No one is laughing now as the Rangers are three points ahead of ninth place Carolina who have two games in hand.

The Rangers seem to have the game under control last night nursing a 2-1 lead in the third period when Gaborik was awarded a penalty shot on a short handed opportunity with about 14 minutes left in the game. Gaborik flubbed the shot and the Rangers flubbed the game. Evander Kane then scored two goals in the space of 3:31 and it was all over.

The Rangers are 7-10-2 in 2011, while the Devils are 12-1-2 so the standings don't tell the real story. It's the past vs. the present. The Rangers past was filled with players playing above and beyond the call to achieve greatness. These players are now spending time on the bench while all the stars are back. The ice time of some big performers in the past has dwindled. Boyle, Stepan and Zuccy don't see the time or the important moments to make that little difference any more.

Be careful what you wish for!

Saturday Night Zeroes

The coach said he went with his stomach on the power play. How about going with his brain? How about going with some intelligence? The power play was 0-4 and got all of one shot in the eight minutes of power play time. They have only three goals in the last twenty six chances. He has guys at the point who refuse or can't shoot the puck. Pick out a couple of guys and STAY with them.

Zuccarello and Del Zotto are not point men. Zuccy don't have the shot and Del Zotto doesn't have the intelligence. How about showing some patience and putting Sauer and Staal at the point and STAY with them a while. It can't be any worse then what we have now.

Also, let's get some toughness up front on the PP. Guys like Avery, Boyle and Prust should be playing IN FRONT of the goalie. Shoot the puck and create havoc in front of the goalie. This perimeter game on the power play has got to stop. Joe and Sam were giving Montreal all kinds of credit for their penalty killing. C'mon guys. The Rangers power play is pathetic, any good Pee Wee team could stop this power play.

One more comment from the coach that is startling. "Should I just leave them alone?" Are the Rangers a product of over coaching? All the so called top players are now back and we are going in reverse. Is he tinkering too much? What was that chant in the movie? "Let the kids play."

There has been much noise about the Rangers going after Sheldon Souray or Tomas Kaberle and Bryan McCabe. There are plus and minuses for all three, but the Rangers can not be too picky as their season is slipping away and they have to do something. Their power play is killing them and the coaching staff doesn't know how to fix it. The other option is to stay the course, take the hit, give up the season and bring in a smarter coach next year.

Lemaire Traps Rangers

So coach disagreeable blames Henrik Lundqvist for the loss last night. In fact the 'personable' coach blames him for the last three losses. No blame to the team for its first two period performance. No blame to Gaborik for not scoring or stepping up his game. No blame to Del Zotto, who continues to play like he is in the Pee Wee league, sorry Nicholas.

No blame to the offense, which was 'offensive', twelve shots in the first two periods and one for six on the power play. The power play could have turned the game around, but how can you do that when Zuccarello and Del Zotto are manning the points. It wasn't opera night at the Garden it was a hockey game.

Now I love Zuccarello, but not at the point on the power play. The power play sucks. Dan Girardi's wristers are not going to do it. You need bombs from the point, not wristers. Del Zotto? He must have relatives in the organization. How else to explain the amount of ice time he continues to get. Someone please tell me what I am missing in his game. Is this our punishment for getting rid of Malik?

Remember when a couple of posts ago I warned, "The good news is that some of the walking wounded will be back." "The bad news is that some of the walking wounded will be back." The Rangers have now lost two straight, and face a tough three game road trip, since the 'stars' are back and the kids are being shipped back to never, never land.

The coach who likes to claim he is honest and forthright fails to blame the number one culprit for last nights loss. Himself. Lemaire cleaned his clock. It was no contest. The Rangers are now .500 at home. Darn it Lundqvist. Get your act together. You are killing us and our Hall Of Fame coach.

Our goaltending just hasn't been good enough... We get five out of the six points if it's just decent goaltending.”

Lapse Equals Loss

It was less than nine minutes, but that was all it took for the injury riddled Penguins to score three goals and cost the Rangers a big point in last night's renewal of what has become the new Hatfield-McCoy feud. It must be a thing with New York teams who can't play a full sixty minutes.

Besides playing without Crosby and Malkin the Pens took another blow when Jordan Staal made like Rocky Marciano and dropped Brandon Prust with a left hook after Prust had clean checked Tyler Kennedy. Staal was banished from the game. It gave the Rangers a short term benefit, a game tying power play goal.

The shootout set up a duel between two of the best big game goalies in the game. This time our boy, Henrik Lundqvist, came out second best to Marc-Andre Fleury, who stopped Marian Gaborik in the seventh round to preserve the two points for the Pens. Dustin Jeffrey had scored the game winner in the top of the seventh.

The big surprise and naturally a disappointment was that Mats Zuccarello failed to score in the shootout. He had scored in four straight shootout games. Time to recharge the battery. Also time for the Rangers to recharge and get back to playing sixty-minute hockey. This team can't afford any lapses, no matter how short. Remember last year. We lost the last playoff position by a point. In a shootout no less.
